How to Write the Absolute Value of a Number

Absolute value is a mathematical term that you might hear in a middle school, high school, or college math classroom. The absolute value of a number is the distance (in terms of digits) from that number to zero, as represented on a number line. Both positive and negative numbers have absolute values. There is a specific way to write the absolute value of a number so that others or your teacher know what you are indicating.

Instructions

    • 1

Write or type a vertical line: I.

    • 2

Insert the number for which you are calculating absolute value: I 7.

    • 3

Add a line to the right of the number: I 7 I

    • 4

Draw or type an equal sign after the second vertical line: I 7 I =

    • 5

Write the answer on the right side of the equal sign. If the number is positive, you simply write the number. If the number is negative, you write the number without the negative sign. For example, you could write I 7 I = 7 or I -7 I = 7.
