How to Write the Remainder as a Mixed Number

Fractions are ratios between two numbers represented by a top number called the numerator and a bottom number called the denominator. Fractions with the numerator larger than the denominator are termed improper fractions and often require conversion to a mixed number containing a whole number with a proper fraction for the remainder. To write the remainder as a mixed number, simply divide the whole number out of the improper fraction and place the remainder over the previous denominator.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the numerator by the denominator. Write the quotient as the whole number of the mixed number. For example, the improper fraction 14/5 divides to become 2 with remainder 4 (14/5 = 2 r 4).

    • 2

Place the remainder over the denominator of the improper fraction. Continuing the example, the remainder 4 is placed over the improper fraction's denominator of 5 to become 4/5. This yields a final answer of 2 4/5 as the mixed number for the improper fraction of 14/5.

    • 3

Convert back to an improper fraction from a mixed number by multiplying the whole number with the denominator and adding the product to the numerator. For instance, to convert the mixed number 1 5/6 to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number 1 by the denominator 6 to produce 6. This is added to the numerator 5 for a total of 11 (6 + 5 = 11). Eleven over the denominator 6 results in the improper fraction 11/6.
