How to Convert Dates Into Egyptian Numbers

The ancient Egyptians were advanced in mathematics; they were able to construct buildings with precision and came close to calculating the exact length of the solar year. Although the details of the ancient Egyptian civil calendar are lost, you can still convert modern dates into ancient Egyptian numbers.

Obtain a reference book or locate a website featuring ancient Egyptian number hieroglyphs. Numbers one through nine are represented by vertical lines. The number 10 is an arch and 100 is represented by a spiral. The hieroglyph for 1,000 looks like the Pac-Man character on top of a stick that is set on the apex of a triangle, with a little "v" protruding from where the stick and triangle meet. A side view of an upward-pointing finger with the nail on the right side represents 10,000, and 100,000 is represented with a side view of a frog. This hieroglyph looks like a vertical line crossed with small horizontal line near its top, and is set on an oval.

Make flashcards with the modern number on the back and the Egyptian number glyphs on the front to help you memorize the hieroglyphs. It may help to place the cards around your home for you to see throughout the day when not using them to test yourself.

Study the number system. Numbers are written right to left. The ancient Egyptians had a base-10 system, which is the system used across the world today. Multiples of a number were represented by writing the hieroglyph of a number repeatedly; for example, two 1,000 hieroglyph in a row equaled 2,000. When using several kinds of hieroglyphs to write a number, put the hieroglyphs representing the larger number first and place the rest in descending order. Group hieroglyphs of the same kind together when writing a number. For example, to write 2012, you would start from the right-hand side of the page and write two 1,000 hieroglyphs, add an arch hieroglyph (a 10) and then add two vertical line hieroglyphs.

Practice writing the number hieroglyphs in the various ways that the ancient Egyptians did, in either vertical columns or horizontal rows.

Pick a date, and draw the appropriate hieroglyphs either vertically or horizontally.
