How to Cite DVDs

Whoever coined the phrase "A picture is worth 1,000 words" must have tried writing a paper about a film. Since it is impossible to directly quote a movie scene, writing such papers requires spending a lots of time tediously describing settings, movements, character appearance and reactions, lighting, cinematography just to establish a basic point. Fortunately, citing your sources is easy. DVD citations are quick and simple, giving you more time to perfect your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the film's title in italics.

    • 2

Write "Dir." and the name of the film's director, for example, "Dir. Woody Allen."

    • 3

Put "Perf." followed by the names of the principal actors, separated by commas, such as "Perf. Woody Allen, Mia Farrow."

    • 4

List the production company, then the copyright date, separated by a comma, as in "MGM, 1983."

    • 5

Write "DVD." as the medium of publication. Your final citation should look like this, except with the film title in italics instead of quotes:

"Zelig." Dir. Woody Allen. Perf. Woody Allen, Mia Farrow. MGM, 1983. DVD.
