How to Cite City Data

Writing technical research articles about a city often requires accessing city data for information. City codes, regulations and publications provide the information needed by writers to complete the article. If this information is used, the city data must be correctly attributed both in the paper and in a "works cited" page. Citing the city information is a simple process after collecting all of the information required.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite a city code by writing the name of the city followed by a comma. Write the name of its state (followed by a comma), and then write the type of code (such as "Municipal Code") along with its section number. A city code citation should look like this: "Dallas, Texas Municipal Code §9-17-01."

    • 2

Insert the city code in an in-text citation if relevant information is stated in the paper. Write the entire citation as the first phrase in a sentence. For example, write "Dallas, Texas Municipal Code §9-17-01 states that business owners must pass a building inspection prior to opening to the public." Alternately, the citation can be placed at the end of the sentence in parentheses.

    • 3

Cite a city government publication by writing the name of the city, followed by its state (in parenthesis, followed by a period). Write the title of the article in italics, followed by a period. Write the city and state again in brackets, followed by the name of the publication. Write the year of its publication in brackets followed by a period.
