How to Cite an Amendment

Citing material and composing a "Works Cited" page is a vital part of writing essays and other documents. If you use someone's material and fail to cite, you have plagiarized and can be severely penalized. Citation guidelines for citing books and online websites are easy to remember, but others, such as citing an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, can be more challenging.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which amendment you are quoting.

    • 2

Following your quotation marks, insert "U.S. Const." followed by "amend." and the Roman numeral of the amendment in parentheses as shown here: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."(U.S. Const. amend. I).

    • 3

Use the same citation in your "Works Cited" page at the end of your paper.
