Farm Math Activities

Using a farm theme to teach math skills helps make the subject interesting to children. Interactive activities also engage the children physically, which will help to hold their interest and help them remember what they learned because they experienced the results, rather than simply hearing them.
  1. Farm Stand

    • Set up a play farm stand and have the children buy and sell pretend produce. A few of the children can set prices on all of the produce, while the other children can use pennies, nickles and dimes to buy the produce. The children operating the farm stand must say the correct prices and give the correct change, while the buyers must check their change. Then have the children switch roles.

    Popular Animals

    • Ask the children to draw a picture of their favorite farm animals and place it on a bulletin board at the front of the room. Give them a graph with a picture of each animal at the bottom, and have them color in squares of the graph for each picture of the animal. This will give them a visual representation of the most popular and least popular farm animals in the class, as well as offer a simple introduction to graphing.

    Sorting

    • Divide the children into two groups and give each group a variety of pictures of farm produce or farm animals. Have the children sort the pictures into groups, without specifying how they should sort them. It could be by color, by type or by size. Then ask the groups to sort in a different way. See how many ways they can think of to sort the pictures. Seeing patterns and groups is a skill in mathematics, and this exercise will allow the children to practice that skill.

    Farm Animal Height

    • Give each child a picture of a different farm animal, such as duck, chicken, goat, cow and horse, as well as a tape measure. Write the average height of their animal on the picture of the animal. On a large strip of paper at the front of the class, have each child use the tape measure to mark and label the height of their animal. The children will learn how to measure things accurately and also the differences in size of the farm animals.
