Create charts for each student with different colors, such as red, green, orange or yellow. Give each student a handful of colored Goldfish snack crackers to use with the charts. Each child will match the color of the goldfish to the color on the chart. After the matching is done, the children will count each color, then write the number on the color. For example, the child with three green Goldfish crackers will write the number "3" on the green section of the chart.
Draw a boat image on paper and make copies for all the children. Make different sized fish images which the children can glue inside the boat picture. Have children count how many fish fit into their boat, glue the fish, then write the number on the side of the boat. Color the creation and display in the classroom before sending home to parents.
Talk to children about oarfish, the longest in the world, while showing them pictures. Ask them if they can guess the size of the creature. Give children a length of string, approximately 100 feet long, and lay the string on the floor. Ask children if they can guess how many students would be needed, laid foot to head, to fill a whole oarfish. Lay the children next to the string and have them count out loud by ones to find out how many students would fill the fish.
Create different types of laminated fish and allow children to sort them during free play or open activity time. Children may sort the fish by size, color, shape or sequence from large to small. An additional activity could be to ask students to record the number of each type of fish on a ready-made chart.
