How to Make a Gel Capsule Experiment

Gel capsules are preferred by many consumers because they are often considered easier to swallow. Pharmaceutical companies promote their ability to relieve pain faster because they store a liquid that mixes with blood at an accelerated rate compared to the amount of time required for stomach acid to break down and distribute the medicine contained in a pressed powder tablet. Creating gel capsules at home is a challenging experiment. However, it is an inexpensive and educational process.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a tray with several small openings of identical size, no larger than those of a pill organizer. Search art supply stores to find trays used for storing paint brushes and art pens upright.

    • 2

Line six tray openings with aluminum foil. Purchase dowels no bigger in diameter than half the size of the tray openings and cut down to 1/4 inch longer than the tray opening's depth. Set to the side of the tray.

    • 3

Prepare the gelatin according to package instructions; however, reduce the amount of water by 1/4 cup. Immediately pour into tray openings and discard remainder.

    • 4

Insert dowel rods into gelatin. Do not allow rods to touch the bottom of the tray. It may be necessary to enlist friends or family to hold the rods in position for several minutes until the gel firms enough to support the dowels upright.

    • 5

Add four drops of food coloring to 1 cup of water and mix. After one hour, remove the dowel rods and fill the hollow center of the capsules with colored water.

    • 6

Prepare the second package of gelatin in the same manner as the previous batch. Use a small eyedropper to create an end cap on each capsule, sealing in the liquid. Allow to set four hours and remove completed capsules from the tray.
