How to Make a Rainbow Experiment

Rainbows are magical occurrences to most children because of their mystery and beauty. It is fun for a child to learn more about something that she finds interesting, especially if she gets to make it happen herself. This is what makes rainbow experiments fun for children; the exploration of the unknown. Use simple tools and materials to set up a rainbow experiment for your students or for children at your home. They will appreciate the effort and learn something new at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the aluminum pie pan with water. Bring the pie pan to a room in your home or at school that is filled with bright sunshine.

    • 2

Place the mirror in the pan so it is leaning against the edge, partially submerged in the water. Set the mirror in the direction of the sun. You want the sun to be shining directly on it. Move the mirror around until a row of colors is noticeable on the wall or ceiling. Count the colors.

    • 3

Bring the pie pan and mirror outside on a sunny day to perform the experiment again. This time, place a white sheet of construction paper and place it across from the mirror to catch the rainbow colors.
