How to Make Bread Mold for a Science Experiment for Kids

You may have spent many years in the kitchen trying to prevent mold from growing on food. But now you need to make bread mold for a kids' science experiment. Mold is a fungus that grows on food to help break it down into useful nutrients and is the source for life-saving penicillin. You can learn how to grow mold in a matter of a few days with simple supplies, which will leave you with a rapidly rotting fungus specimen to use for a science experiment.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a slice of any type of bread into 1-inch pieces. Let the kids dip each chunk of bread into some water.

    • 2

Instruct the children to place the bread inside a sealed plastic sandwich bag or in a clear storage container. Close the container and seal it tight with tape.

    • 3

Place the bread in an out-of-the-way, warm place. The top of the refrigerator or the laundry room are two good choices.

    • 4

Wear a mask and gloves when you check the bread for mold growth every day, for as long as two weeks. Watch the mold spread and rot the bread. Instruct the kids to record the changes they see each day.

    • 5

When you are finished with the experiment, throw out the bag or container without opening it.
