Name Tag Ideas for a Computer Classroom

Many teachers use name tags to help learn the names of new students, but computer class teachers face a unique challenge. Computer class students sit behind computer monitors which cover name tags attached to clothing. Monitors also obstruct a teacher's view of the students' faces, hampering his ability to quickly and easily learn the students' names.
  1. Commercial Name Tags

    • The easiest way to make computer classroom name tags is to buy standard name tags at a teaching supply store and modify them to work with a computer lab. Hand a tag to every student and ask each student to clearly write his name on the tag. Use double sided tape to attach the tags to the backside of the computer monitors, facing the teacher.

    Handmade Name Tags

    • Make handmade name tags to use in a computer lab. A teacher can make the tags or provide materials for students to make the tags. Cut gray paper into the shape of a computer monitor. Write the student's name on the tag and use double sided tape to attach it to the back of the monitor. Students can hang their tags when they arrive at class and remove them at the end of class so another student can use the computer.

    Computer Generated Name Tags

    • Make name tags using a computer program. Use a word processing program to generate and print name tags. Cut the tags apart and then plasticize each tag. Punch a hole at the top of the tag and attach a removable hook (available at office supply stores) to the back side of each monitor. Have students hang their name tags on the hooks at the beginning of every class and remove them at the end.

Other Name Tag Ideas for a Computer Classroom

    • Consider other creative alternatives to standard name tags. Have students think of computer based nicknames for themselves. Then have them write their nicknames and real first names on index cards and tape them to the desk in front of their computer stations. For instance, a student might choose the nickname, "C Drive Sadie" or "Keyboard Kendal."

Advanced computer students can create their own computer generated name tags. Have the students create a full color name tag for their computer stations. Students can include photographs and decorative fonts in their creations.
