How to Measure the Square Feet of Odd Shapes

Square feet is a measure of area, and area is the amount of space a two-dimensional shape covers. Square feet may be used in a wide range of arenas, including gardening, sewing and architecture. While the formulas for determining the area of regular shapes like circles, squares, and rectangles are easily used, determining the area of an odd shape is more complex.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the irregular shape on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Divide the shape into regular shapes using a dotted line. For example, if you are trying to discover the area of a trapezoid, divide it into one rectangle in the middle and 2 right triangles at the sides.

    • 3

Calculate the lengths of the sides of all of the shapes.

    • 4

Figure out the area of each regular shape in square units.

    • 5

Add all of the areas of regular shapes together. This is the area of your irregular shape.
