How to Graph Matrices in TI-84

A matrix is a collection of numbers displayed in a rectangular format, where each number in a matrix is referred to as an element. Matrices can be used to solve problems in a multitude of fields, including physics and calculus. Matrices are also useful for graphing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional plane. Since the TI-84 calculator is not capable of graphing in three-dimensions, using matrices can be useful for graphing and calculating these problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Press "2nd" and "x-1" to launch the matrix function. This button is located in the first column and fourth row down on the calculator.

    • 2

Scroll over to "Edit" using the arrow keys and press "Enter" to select it.

    • 3

Set the number of rows and columns for the problem. For example, if your problem was 4 columns by 4 rows, you would push "4", "Enter", "4", "Enter."

    • 4

Input the numbers from your matrix starting in the top left and moving left to right, top to bottom.

    • 5

Press "Y=" to launch the graphing function of your calculator, and press "Clear" to delete any previous data that was entered.

    • 6

Highlight "\Y1=" and press "2nd" and "x-1" to input your matrix into the field. Your calculator will now say "\Y=MATRX."

    • 7

Press "Graph" to graph the matrix.
