How to Change Real Numbers Into Fractions on a TI-83

In practical mathematics decimal form is the most useful and therefore most commonly used form of numbers. As a result, Texas instrument calculators default to decimal form in their calculations. However, sometimes you need that number displayed as a fraction but getting there can be tricky if you don't know steps to take.

Instructions

  1. Converting From Decimals to Fractions

    • 1

Enter the decimal. For example, if you wanted to convert 1.25 into a fraction you would start by entering 1.25 into the calculator using the appropriate keys. You can also convert decimals that you have reached through a computation by following Steps 2 through 4 after reaching your answer.

    • 2

Press the "Math" button, located on the leftmost column, third from the top beneath the "Alpha" key. This key will bring up a menu that lists a few options.

    • 3

Find and select "> frac" from the menu options. This should be the first choice available to you but if it is not you can use the down arrow button located just above the "clear" button.

    • 4

Press the "Enter" button located on the very bottom right of the calculator once you have the "> frac" option selected.

If you were converting 1.25 into a fraction, after selecting "> frac" your screen will read "1.25 >frac" if you entered the number in without any computation. If you reached the number after a computation then the screen will read "ANS > frac". Either way press the "Enter" button again and your answer will be converted into a fraction. In this example, 5/4 will be displayed.
