How to Set Up a TI-83 for Graphing

Whether you are using your TI-83 in the classroom or for a practical application, knowing how to set up and use the graphing feature can save time and effort from manually having to graph the function. Developed by Texas Instruments, the TI-83 graphing calculator was designed to have a user-friendly interface and easy-to-find settings. To get started using the graph function on the TI-83, you may want to check and establish a few basic settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the blue "2nd" button followed by the "Zoom" button to enter the "Formats" menu. In the menu, you can change the physical settings to your graphing preference. For example, if you want the axis for the graph to be on, simply scroll to the "AxesOn" option and press the "Enter" button.

    • 2

Push the "Clear" button to exit out of the "Format" menu.

    • 3

Press the "Zoom" button located across the top of the calculator keypad. In the "Zoom" menu, scroll down with your bottom-arrow button and select the "Zstandard" setting. This resets your graph so that you can see all four quadrants equally. If you want to change the zoom later, press the "Zoom" button again and select the "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out" options.

    • 4

Press the "Y=" button on the top-left corner of the keypad. Enter the function you want to graph and press the "Graph" button in the top-right corner of the keypad. The screen will display an x-axis and a y-axis with a sketch of your graph. If your function is more complex, it may take longer to process the graph than if you were to graph a simple function like "x+1."
