How to Measure the Impact of School Closures

School superintendents and administrators are responsible for the well-being of every school in the district. When a school building is closed, the effects must be measured after the closure. The students assigned to the school that closes will be re-assigned to a new school since every young person is required by law to attend school. Measuring the impact of a closed school on the school district and the remaining schools requires review of hard facts, such as grade point averages and class sizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Monitor student progress. When a school closes, students from the closed school must attend other schools. The change can impact the academic progress of some students. Ask teachers for quarterly grade reports to assess impact.

    • 2

Review attendance logs in the schools where the students transferred from the closed schools. Attendance logs will reveal class sizes, which will be bigger in some cases.

    • 3

Assess student transfer rates out of the district after a pre-determined time frame, such as five years, to gauge district-wide reaction to the school closure. Families may transfer students when they are unhappy with a school closure or when they feel the new class sizes are too big for proper learning.

    • 4

Review high school graduation rates over a period of years paired with student grade point averages at graduation to help determine the academic effect of a school closure.
