Create a simple scale numbered one through 10, with one being the worst and ten being the best. You will assign your principal a number ranking on the chart after you finish the evaluation.
Write a brief description to go with each number ranking. For example, number 10 should list all the best traits you expect to see from a principal (such as a passion for education, very organized personality and good rapport with the school staff) while number one should list all the undesirable traits for a principal (cruelty to students, lack of motivation and a short temper).
Interview the principal to get an understanding of why he enjoys his occupation and how well he handles interaction with the public. Learn about his past experience and credentials. Take notes during the interview so you can compare his desirable and undesirable traits with your list.
Observe the principal as he interacts with students and staff members. Make notes on his tact and method of communicating with others.
Interview staff members and students to understand how they perceive the principal. They may have insights you didn't perceive during your observation of the principal that will help determine his grade.
Inspect the school. If it seems to be functioning in an orderly manner, it's a good sign that your principal knows a thing or two about organization and proper school policy.
Compare your notes with the list. Assign your principal's grade by determining which ranking best describes him.
