How to Convert Inch-Pounds to Nanometers

When you pull back the hammer on a pinball machine and release it, it strikes the ball with a force that makes it roll forward a certain number of inches. According to the scientific definition of the word, the hammer just performed "work." The U.S. Customary System measures work in foot-pounds or inch-pounds, which describes the work performed when one pound of force moves an object 1 inch. However, sometimes an inch is too large of a measurement. For example, if you strike a lead ball with the same hammer, it might only move a tiny fraction of an inch -- a distance that is better described in nanometers. In these circumstances, it is more convenient to discuss work in nanometer-pounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply inch-pounds by 0.0254 to convert it to meter-pounds.

      For example, 3.94 * 10^-6 inch-pounds equals 1.00076 * 10^-7 meter-pounds.

    • 2

Multiply meter-pounds by 1,000,000,000 to convert it to nanometer-pounds.

      (1.00076 * 10^-7) * 1,000,000,000 = 100.076 nanometer-pounds.

    • 3

      Round, if necessary.

      100.076 equals approximately 100 nanometer-pounds.
