Form walking school buses in your district. Adults from each neighborhood in your town are assigned to supervise a group of students walking or riding their bikes to school together. The group picks up other children on its way to school.
Eliminate busing for elementary school students who live within 1/2 mile of the school. For middle and high school students, eliminate buses for those students who are a mile or two from the school. The exact mileage would depend upon your location. Students who live on dangerous roads will need transportation regardless of distance.
Shorten bus routes and eliminate bus stops. Require students to walk further to the bus stops to allow for a more direct path to the school. This will cut down on fuel expenses.
Charge your students to ride the bus to school. Arrange for a set monthly fee. Offer discounts for families with multiple children.
Reduce or eliminate traveling sports programs. If this is not a possibility, charge an extra transportation fee when students enroll in the sport.
If transportation is a must in your district, consider changing to a four-day school week. This eliminates a day of transportation, reducing busing costs greatly.
