Physically disabled children who can move a computer mouse or press a button can express themselves through digital art. Most home and school computers are pre-loaded with drawing and digital painting software. Children whose movements are restricted can use a computer drawing tablet and a stylus to create digital art. The digital drawing surface of a computer tablet is responsive to a soft touch. Encourage children to place color anywhere on the screen, draw lines or use any digital brush style they want to create abstract art. Print the art with a color printer so it can be displayed.
Children with physical disabilities, especially visually impaired children, can take part in tactile art activities such as making free-form clay sculptures. Encourage students to mold clay in their hands, poke holes using their fingers and form the clay in any way they want. Children can use modeling clay to make temporary clay sculptures, or they can use pottery clay, which can be dried and painted later. Arrange all supplies on a table so visually impaired student can easily locate each item. Encourage the children to have fun and let their creativity flow.
Give the children different colored sheets of tissue paper and a white or black poster board. Use poster board measuring 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches for easy handling. The children can tear the tissue paper into strips and different shapes. Spread some clear-drying school glue on the poster board or spritz it with spray adhesive. The children can arrange the torn bits of colored tissue paper on the poster board to make an abstract collage. They can use as much or as little tissue paper as they wants to create their art.
Remove the paper from preschool "chubby" crayons so children can use the entire length of the crayon to draw on paper. Tape the corners of drawing paper to a table or desk for a child who has difficulty using a crayon while holding the paper still. Children can use the tip of the crayon or lay the crayon flat on the paper to draw. Several crayons can be taped together for children who have trouble holding a single crayon. Encourage the children to create any design or draw any picture they want. They can use the crayons in any combination to create a colorful drawing.
