Art Activities With Character Traits

It can be very fun to teach characterization and character traits to young children through art activities. Most young students enjoy arts and crafts, and most children can learn with hands-on activities. Imagine this: students use visual aids that they made to learn about character traits of characters from the current class reading.
  1. Journaling from a Character's Perspective

    • Have the children pretend they are one of the main characters in the story. Have them write a journal entry as one of the main characters. Then, have the children draw a picture on the journal entry to describe the character's emotion. Is the character happy? Is the character sad? Angry? Then have the students act out how the character feels in the story.

Make A Large Character with Traits

    • Give the children a large piece of poster board or large, white sheet of paper. Ask them to draw one of the characters from the story. Give them a variety of art supplies, including several (appropriate magazines). Tell them to describe the character by cutting and pasting items to their papers. Also, allow them to use the other art supplies to create how they see that particular character. Each child can tell the teacher or the other children in a circle-like session what the character is doing.
