Write down homework assignments in a daily planner so you have a reminder of exactly what needs to be done and when. Include a box in front of each written assignment that is checked off when complete.
Place all homework and any related notes or study guides into color-specific folders. Use a different color folder for each subject to eliminate clutter and easily locate homework for a particular class. If all of your math homework is placed inside a red folder, and all your English homework inside a yellow folder, make sure you return completed homework back to its respective folder color.
Organize your workspace. Give yourself a clean, comfortable area in which to sit and do your homework. Have all necessary materials readily available at your workspace, including pencils, pens, highlighters and paper, but leave a large writing area specifically for your homework. Place your homework here as soon as you enter your home after school each day. If you constantly place something in the same spot, your mind starts to rely upon that visual connection, hence you are less likely to forget about doing your homework. Make it a routine to place all finished homework inside your book bag so you don’t forget to take it back to school.
Display your homework assignments on your bedroom door or refrigerator, and possibly even a schedule for the day or week that reminds you of a certain block of time set aside for homework. Write down the information on a blackboard or dry erase board, and include upcoming tests to give you a visual reminder to study for them. Use brightly colored sticky notes attached to your work area to visually remind yourself that homework needs to be done.
Break down homework or studies for tests into visual representations whenever possible to increase the likelihood of recalling information more easily. Examples include diagramming a sentence for English, making a comparison graph or other visual element to aid in finding a math problem’s solution. You can also create a chart or diagram drawing of science terms and constructing a timeline to better recall historical dates. Use a highlighter to attract your eye to text revealing key information and jot down notes of things you must know in order to do your homework or prepare for a test. By doing this, you create a visual to look back on, and a mental picture of yourself writing particular things down. Organize your notes by writing down information on different colored index cards or paper that correspond to different subjects.
