How to Make Classroom Charts for Line Leaders in School

Any early childhood teacher knows the importance that young children place on being the line leader. When asked who wants to be in front, the students will quickly clamber to be given this special place. Leaving the leader job up in the air until it is actually time to line up may not be the best tactic for maintaining a quiet and orderly classroom. Creating a well-planned list of daily leaders can help to ease tensions during line-up transition times. Teachers can create a classroom chart of line leaders for each day of the week.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a blank days of the week calendar. Draw a rectangle onto a 14-by-22-inch or larger piece of white poster board. Use the ruler to make straight lines. Move your ruler approximately 2 inches down from the top of the chart. Draw a horizontal line all the way across the length of the rectangle to use as a days-of-the-week space. Repeat the horizontal line drawing to make five more spaces for the weeks.

    • 2

Draw vertical lines to make days-of-the-week dividers. Make the first vertical line at least 2 inches from the left side of the chart. Create five vertical lines, spaced equally apart. These will complete the square grid spaces for the chart, plus one extra on the left for labeling the weeks. Write "Week 1," "Week 2," "Week 3," "Week 4" and "Week 5" into the leftmost squares.

    • 3

Label the top squares of the chart Monday through Friday.

    • 4

Cut out quarter-sized circles from the photos of the children. Make one circle that shows the face only for each child. Cut and apply a piece of self-adhesive Velcro to the back of each circle photo.

    • 5

Cut a piece of Velcro for each blank calendar square of the chart. Peel off the backing of one side of the Velcro and apply it to each square.

    • 6

Velcro a different child's picture for each day of the week, signifying that he will be the line leader for that day. Smaller classes will not fill the entire chart. Start at the beginning of the month, or first Monday, and fill up as much of the chart as you can. Move the first child's photo to the next blank square after he finishes being line leader for the day.
