Can the naval academy recruit for sports?

The United States Naval Academy does recruit for sports, offering scholarships to potential student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional athletic ability and meet the criteria for admission to the academy. These scholarships are known as "athletic appointments." They are awarded based on a combination of factors including academic performance, athletic achievements, and physical fitness test scores.

Potential candidates must meet certain academic requirements and submit SAT or ACT scores, as well as provide a list of extracurricular activities and athletic achievements. They also must undergo physical and medical examinations.

For specific sports, the Naval Academy may have additional criteria. For instance, candidates for the football team must be at least 5 feet and 9 inches tall and weigh at least 170 pounds, and must have a minimum ACT score of 23 or SAT score of 1080.

The Academy offers more than 35 varsity sports for men and women. These include:

- Football

- Basketball

- Baseball

- Lacrosse

- Rugby

- Sailing

- Water Polo

Student-athletes receive financial support for tuition, fees, room, and board. Upon graduation, they are commissioned as Navy Ensigns and serve for at least five years.
