Obtain cheerleading experience of your own. If you did not have a spot on a cheerleading squad in school, you can gain experience through volunteering with a local youth cheerleading league, working at a gymnasium that offers cheerleading lessons, or working or volunteering at a cheerleading camp.
Meet all requirements for the school, university or district's employment or volunteer requirements. Many schools will require that you have work or volunteer experience, be willing to submit to a background check and be mature and capable of chaperoning. Some schools require that you also be a trained educator or coach and that you be a current teacher or staff member.
Apply for the position. Submit all necessary paperwork and use the school, university or district's preferred application procedure.
Communicate your interest and experience to the administrator responsible for hiring. Either in your application's cover letter or a separate note, be sure to include any experience you have in selecting members of a cheerleading squad, training cheerleaders, developing cheerleading routines and keeping track of paperwork and other administrative duties.
Fulfill all job duties, if hired or appointed. Some schools also require advisers to serve as role models for the cheerleading team. Respect your professional boundaries and serve as a mentor to the cheerleaders in your charge.
