How to Select a Cooking School

If you have always had a passion for food and cooking, you may be considering a career in the culinary arts. But with so many schools all over the United States offering cooking programs, you may be having difficulty deciding which cooking school is the right fit for you. As with every educational path, there are pros and cons to each program. As such, you should always take adequate time to select the best cooking school for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm that the schools you are considering are fully accredited by doing a Web search at the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

    • 2

Contact recent graduates and ask them about their experiences. You can contact the school's alumni registry, or search out recent grads on Facebook.

    • 3

Research the instructors currently working at the school. What sort of restaurant experience do they have? Have they published any cookbooks? How long have they been teaching?

    • 4

Inquire about kitchen amenities. Ask an admissions representative at the cooking school when the kitchens were last upgraded, what types of kitchen equipment are used, and if there are opportunities to use speciality equipment, such as Chinese-style kitchens with wok stations.
