Purchase a grip brush. This brush costs less than $5 and will last longer than your grips. Use the brush to get off some of the chalk after you practice. The brush will also help keep your grips tight.
Place the grips in a plastic storage bag before putting them away. This will keep the grips from rubbing up against any other type of material that could damage the leather.
Place a wristband under each wrist and then take your grips out of their plastic bag. Put your grips on over the wristbands. This will prevent the grips from rubbing against your wrists. This protects your wrists from damage as well as the grips from unnecessary wear and tear.
Apply chalk to your grips before working on the bars. Only a small amount of chalk is necessary if you are also applying chalk to the bars. Just be careful you don't apply too much chalk and make the bars slippery.
Clean any fuzz out of the Velcro straps on your grips. When dirt and fuzz get into the Velcro, you can't close your grips properly. This can cause you to have to replace your grips prematurely.
