How to Care for A Client Suspected to have Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that is transmitted through the air. A patient who is coughing and complains of chills, night sweats, weight loss and loss of appetite amongst other things may have tuberculosis. It is important for the nurse to take immediate action to prevent the spread of the disease if tuberculosis is suspected.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a surgical mask on the patient if he or she is in a public place, to prevent the spread of tuberculosis if the patient does have it.

    • 2

Isolate the patient.Place the client in a private negative pressure room with no other patient.

    • 3

Institute airborne precautions. Ensure that everyone that goes into the patients room puts on an N-95 mask. This reduces the risk of staff or visitors getting the tuberculosis bacteria.

    • 4

Put on a gown when going into the clients room, if he is coughing without properly covering his mouth. Do this to prevent transmission of the disease.

    • 5

Put a surgical mask on the patient if he needs to be transported for tests or to other departments. Use the shortest and least busy route available to reduce the risk of transmission of tuberculosis.
