Because seniors are a big part of your school and will be graduating soon, show your appreciation for them by hosting a senior dinner. The Michigan Associations of Student Councils and Honor Societies suggest hosting this event at a local restaurant, and maybe even hiring a DJ (if your budget allows). To offset the cost of this kind of event, you could charge an admission fee or sell tickets. This event is a great way to get the senior class to bond and strengthen friendships and school pride during their last year of high school.
Get your whole community involved in the fun by having local businesses decorate their windows to celebrate spirit week, or encouraging neighborhood families to decorate their yards with banners or signs that show their school spirit. Not only will this promote a sense of unity and school pride in the community, but it will also be a great way to intimidate your rival team as they drive into town for the homecoming game. You could even make this into a contest and award a school spirit prize at the big game (like a season pass to school sporting events, or T-shirts with your school mascot on them) to the business or family with the best decorations.
There’s no better way to get your student body excited about homecoming than to host a pep rally. Recognize the athletes and coaches that will be taking part in the upcoming game. Have cheerleaders perform a routine to get the crowd pumped up. You could even host competitions between different grade levels, to see who has the most school spirit, and award a prize (like a pizza party or free tickets to the big game). Create competitions for silly, fun events, like a school spirit skit, lip-synch, cheer, or relay race. Everyone will have fun, and it is an enjoyable way to bring together students who may not ordinarily spend time together.
Since your school mascot is the ultimate symbol of school spirit, have him make some guest appearances throughout the week. He could show up in the cafeteria during lunch to start up a cheer, or burst into classes at random to hand out school spirit trinkets (like pins or stickers). Be careful to respect teachers' rules by requesting permission before “surprising” them with a mascot’s guest appearance.
