Ideas for Homecoming at the Elementary Level

Homecoming festivities are typically thought to be reserved for older students playing intercollegiate sports, but elementary students can host their own homecoming activities as well. Because elementary schools tend to be smaller and relegated to activities during the school day, festive events can be mirrored from a high school and recreated on a smaller scale for young children.
  1. Spirit Mums and Memorabilia

    • In high school, girls traditionally wear large corsages made from ribbons and other school paraphernalia called "mums" that are pinned to their shirts. Elementary school students can make a version of mums and other spirited gear in their classrooms. As craft projects, children can make paper badges with ribbon tails, spirit sticks, noise makers, pom-poms and banners utilizing their school colors and mascot.

    Parade

    • Children at the elementary level can have a homecoming parade in their gym, cafeteria or outdoor courtyard. Students can be arranged by class and encouraged to wear school colors. Each class can perform a song or cheer while marching and using instruments -- such as a triangle, maracas or similar noise makers -- they made in class. Parents can be invited to attend, and students can watch other classes as the parade winds around the room.

    Pep Rally

    • Teachers can help organize a pep rally for elementary school students by performing school cheers for the children. Young students enjoy seeing their teachers perform for them, so the chance to see the teachers doing school cheers will potentially increase school spirit and excitement in the children. Children can also be encouraged to dress in school colors and make signs or banners to display. Teachers can extend the pep rally by including silly acts and games like a pie toss, a basketball shoot-out between students and teachers or a dance routine.

    Tailgate Party

    • The school can host a tailgate party picnic for students and their families at lunchtime or after school. Adults can help serve sack lunches or cook hot dogs and other outdoor fare to serve the children. The kids can participate in school cheers and play outdoor games like soccer or volleyball during the picnic. A tailgate party will get the entire elementary school community connected at a festive event.
