Working with clay is an enjoyable experience for young children. Teach the children should be taught how to make two kinds of simple pots. The first method should involve pressing a thumb into the clay, and the second should involve making coil pots with strips of clay.
Children invariably like making music. Younger children's natural enthusiasm springs from their curiosity about everything new and fresh. Encourage each child to try to play several different musical instruments freely. Then have the children play a tune together, with the main emphasis being keeping in time. Give the children at least three minutes of playing time unless they stop playing themselves. If the children are struggling to keep time, see if they can work out their own mistakes.
Bring to the class a story to which which the children will relate strongly. Then turn it into a short play, written by the pupils, that involves every member of the class. Some pupils will be more assertive than others; make an effort to involve reticent pupils as well as the confident performers. For instance, some pupils may be happier writing the play rather than performing.
Have the class create a jungle scene. Pin a large sheet of paper on the wall on which the children can paint a jungle scene. Ideally, this sheet should be 12 feet wide by 3 feet high, which will give the class enough room to work together. The children should create the creatures for this jungle by drawing on colored card stock. Each pupil should have card stock of a different color. They can then cut out the animals and glue them onto the jungle painting.
