Classroom Activities for Three-Year-Olds

Creating classroom activities for three-year-olds can be a challenge when it comes to keeping toddlers entertained. Most classroom activities can be messy or lose the attention of a three-year-old after a few minutes. But with organized crafts and educational games such as alphabet, memory, and math activities, three-year-olds will have fun and stay entertained while learning in the classroom.
  1. Alphabet Activities

    • Help three-year-olds memorize the alphabet by turning it into a fun classroom activity. Help children recognize different letters by showing them something in a room that begins with a certain letter. For example, say, "This is a door. D." Have the children then find other items in the room or in picture-books that begin with that letter by sounding out words with them. Try to go through as much of the alphabet as you can.

    Craft Activities

    • Occupy three-year-olds with fun and easy classroom craft activities. Have the children place one hand in a tray of non-toxic paint. Help them press their hand onto sturdy construction paper to form their handprint. The paper may be used for a personal card or a piece of artwork. Entertain three-year-olds with coloring books, or use large-lined paper and have the toddlers practice writing their names. Spell their name for them a few times, then have them try on their own.

    Memory Activities

    • Cut matching pair shapes from colorful construction paper or shiny wrapping paper. Tape or glue the shapes onto separate index cards. Five pairs is a good amount for three-year-old children. Place the index cards with the shape-side facing down and have the children turn over two cards at a time to try to find each matching pair. Try the same activity with colors. Hold up one red card and ask the toddler to find the other, and so on. Each memory activity will improve their memory and help children recognize shapes and colors.

    Math Activities

    • Counting games can be adapted to many activities in the classroom. These simple activities will help three-year-olds develop their math skills in everyday routines. Have the three-year-old children count as they clean up, numbering off every toy they pick up. Have them count windows and doors in the classroom or do a head count of children in the classroom. Play a counting came at snack or lunch time, having the children count aloud as they place napkins, paper plates and paper cups on the desks.
