Constitution Day Activities for the Elementary Classroom

Constitution Day is a day for celebrating the formation and signing of the United States Constitution. It is celebrated on September 17 because that was the day the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787. Teach elementary school kids about the significance of this holiday with classroom activities that help kids understand the Constitution.
  1. Classroom Constitution

    • Begin the lesson by reading an age-appropriate version of the United States Constitution. Explain to students that this document was created by the people of the United States and is considered to be the highest law in the country. Divide the class into small groups of three to five and instruct them to brainstorm ideas for a classroom constitution. Ask them to include the role of the teacher and the goals for the classroom learning environment in their constitution. As a class, combine all the group ideas into one master classroom constitution.

    Coloring Pages

    • For younger elementary school students, celebrate Constitution Day with special coloring sheets. Print out Constitution-themed coloring pages such as images of scales of justice, the White House and George Washington. Before handing them out, explain the significance of each image to the kids. Give them crayons and markers and allow them to color and take home their Constitution Day coloring pages.

    New Laws

    • Explain to the class that the Constitution is an ever-changing document and that amendments are constantly added to meet the needs of society. Divide the class into groups of three to five students and instruct them to come up with some new laws or amendments to the current classroom rules. For example, what is the punishment for being late? Or what should happen when homework is not turned in? Gather all the suggested amendments and practice voting as a class to see what new laws are applied to the classroom.

    Activity Sheets

    • For intermediate level elementary school students, hand out interactive Constitution Day worksheets to help teach kids about this holiday. Word searches and crossword puzzles with Constitution Day-themed vocabulary are great tools for kids to learn about the Constitution. Words might include congress, liberty, Jefferson and rights. Explain to the kids the significance of each word and discuss what they mean to us today.
