Multiplication Math Games to Play

Just mentioning multiplication facts to many children will bring groans and looks of misery. Flashcards drills and writing fact families probably feels like drudgery to active children. But you can make learning multiplication facts fun. There are many games to play to help children memorize their facts quickly and without the dull routine of flashcards.
  1. Websites

    • There are many websites available that include games for multiplication fact practice. One of the most popular is Multiplication.com (see Resources). This website has a variety of games for the child to choose from. The games can also be customized to include specific fact families or all of the fact families. After answering a certain number of problems correctly, the child gets a few minutes of game play as a reward. The website also includes stories to go with each fact family that will give the child a creative way to remember his multiplication facts.

    Timez Attack

    • Timez Attack is available online as a downloadable game (see Resources). There are two versions--a free version and an expanded version that must be purchased. In this 3D game, children must make their way through the dungeon maze and defeat characters that get in their way by answering multiplication facts. Timez Attack uses repetition to help students learn their facts quickly. It keeps a record of the student's progress and will review facts that they consistently answer wrong.

    Multiplication Top-It

    • This game requires a deck of playing cards. Be sure to include four of each number one through 10, and do not include any face cards. The deck of cards is shuffled and placed face down between the two players. Each player turns over two cards and multiplies the numbers on his two cards together. The player with the highest product captures all of the cards. If the product for each child's problem is the same (a tie), the players turn over two more cards. Then, the player with the highest product collects all the cards from both rounds. When the deck of cards has been depleted, the player with the most cards in her possession wins the game.

    Card Capture

    • For this card game, you will need a set of multiplication flash cards. These can be made from index cards if you do not have access to pre-made flash cards. This game is for two players. Divide the cards equally between the players. The first player (the defender) show one of his cards to the other player (the attacker). The attacker must then answer that multiplication fact correctly. If he does, he captures the card and the defender gives him another problem to solve. Play continues this way until the attacker answers incorrectly. He then becomes the defender and shows one of his cards to his opponent to solve. When all cards have been used, the player with the most cards wins the game.
