Math baseball, available on Fun Brain (see References), gives kids the opportunity to rack up big scores while learning mathematics. It is an excellent primer for basic arithmetic because a child can do adding, subtracting, multiplication and division. There is a small white box where they must type their answer. Once they've typed in their answer, they hit "swing." If they are right, they get a hit. The kind of hit they get depends on the difficulty of the question. The more difficult the question is, the bigger the hit. If they get a question wrong, they get an out. Three outs and its game over.
Grand Prix Multiplication, available at Academic Skill Builders (see References), gives your kids a chance to race while they learn how to multiply. Your kids will participate with people online or computer-controlled opponents to win the race. They will be given a multiplication problem. On top of the racing field, there are four numbered answers. Typing 1, 2, 3 or 4, depending on the correct answer, will increase your car's speed. Answering slowly or getting the wrong answer can slow your speed. Get the most right to win.
Number Invaders, available at Math Playground (see References) is a loving parody of the 1980s arcade game Space Invaders. At the beginning of the game, your child can choose from adding, subtracting, multiplication or division. They also chose a difficulty level based on their grade. Once the game starts, the enemies start descending. On each enemy is a number. To the upper right of the screen, there will be a math problem. Shoot the right alien to solve the problem. Destroy all the aliens to beat the stage.
