Card Games for Math

Some children have difficulty learning basic math principles. Incorporating math concepts through fun card games is one way to help children develop solid math skills. The games can involve simple basic adding and subtracting for very young children or can be altered to include more complex number manipulation for advanced or older children.
  1. Quick Draw Addition Game

    • This game is designed for two players. Each player has a deck of playing cards. The jokers and face cards are removed. The aces have a value of 1. Each player shuffles their opponent's deck and returns the deck to them. The decks are placed, face down, in front of the players. Both players turn over the top card from their deck and places it in the middle of the table. The first player who adds up the numbers and shouts out the results wins both cards. The game continues until all of the cards have been played. Each player counts up the number of cards they have accumulated. The player with the most cards wins the game. To challenge older children, have the players turn over two or three cards each time.

    Multiplication War Game

    • This game is played with two players. The setup for this game is similar to that for the quick draw. Then each player turns over two cards from the top of their deck, reads the numbers aloud, performs the multiplication and states the result. For example, if a player turns over a 3 and a 6, he says, "18." The player with the highest product wins the hand, takes all four cards and puts them in a separate prisoner's pile. If the products are the same, then it is war. When this happens, each player puts four cards from their deck, face down on the table. Two of the four cards are turned over and the player with the highest product wins all eight cards and puts them in his prisoner's pile. When all of the cards have been played, players count the cards in their prisoner's pile. The player with the most cards wins the game.

    HI-LO Subtracting Game

    • This game can be played with two of more players. Two decks of playing cards are used; however, the jokers and face cards are removed. Aces have a value of 1. Shuffle the decks at the start of the game and place the cards, face down, in the center of the players. Each player draws two cards. Players subtract the lower number from the higher number. The player with the lowest result wins the hand and takes all the cards. Play continues until all the cards have been played. The players count up all of their accumulated cards and the one with the most cards wins the game. For advanced players, each player turns over three cards and subtracts the third card from the first two.

    Wild War Game

    • The setup for this game is similar to that for the quick draw. Then each player turns over three cards and can perform any mathematical manipulation they choose with the numbers. The player with the highest number wins all the cards and places them in his prisoner's pile. When all cards have been played, players count the cards in their prisoner's pile. The player with the most cards wins the game. A variation of this would be the reverse; players try to make the lowest positive number.
