Math Addition Projects

Learning addition facts takes practice. Teaching addition to kids can be easy and fun if you use projects and activities as learning aids. There are an abundance of addition projects you can use to help students learn math facts as well as allow them to use their creativity. Don't be afraid to try something different to help encourage students to learn addition.
  1. Grocery Shopping

    • Give all of the students a newspaper grocery ad and a piece of construction paper. Tell them they must buy at least 25 items and cannot go over $75. Have them cut out the items they want to purchase and glue them to their construction paper. Tell them to write the total amount of money spent in the top right-hand corner of their construction paper.

    Coin Counting

    • Give the students 10 paper coins and a piece of construction paper. Tell them to glue their coins on the construction paper and total the amount of money they have. Instruct them to write how much money they have on the construction paper.

    Bottle Cap Addition

    • Collect 200 water bottle caps. A good way to do this is have each student bring in at least five bottle caps. Write numbers on the top of each bottle cap with a permanent marker and give each student 10 caps and a paper cup. Tell students to place their caps in the cup and shake the cup with one hand over the top so the caps don't come out. Tell them to select five caps from the cup, write down and add the numbers on the tops and record their answers on a piece of paper. Keep doing this as many times as you like to get addition practice.

    Count the Cards

    • Instruct each student to take out a blank piece of paper and something to write with. Use a deck of cards to pull from. Call out a sequence of four to five cards at a time and tell students to add the face value and raise their hands when done. Call on students to give the answer.
