Team Building Activities for Elementary Classrooms

Team building activities in the classroom are a way to introduce the pupils to each other in a fun manner. These activities take the pressure off introductions as the pupils share information about themselves through a game or must work together toward a common goal. Team building activities help create a positive community atmosphere that will last all year long.
  1. Zig Zag Zop

    • Instruct the pupils to stand in a circle. Begin with one pupil saying "zig" while looking at another pupil. That pupil responds by saying "zag" at another pupil. The third pupil then says "zop" and must fully extend his arm and point at another pupil. Anyone who moves his arm while saying "zig" or "zag" is out and must sit down. Anyone who does not move his arm while saying "zop" is also out. Play an advanced version of the game by speeding it up; anyone who hesitates is out.

    I'll Be Your Guide

    • Play I'll Be Your Guide to help pupils with their communication and listening skills. Set up an obstacle course with traffic cones in an area with plenty of room, such as the school football field or sectioned-off parking lot. The obstacle course can be as simple or as intricate as you want. The pupils are grouped in twos with one pupil blindfolded. The other pupil must guide the blindfolded pupil through the obstacle course safely.

    Counting

    • Instruct the pupils to form a circle. Everyone must have her head down and pupils are not allowed to make eye contact. The group must count to 10 one at a time. If any two pupils say the same number at the same time, the game must start over. Once the pupils get past 10, have them see how high they can go.

    M&M Introduction

    • This activity is ideal on the first day of school. Pass out handfuls or fun-size packets of M&M candies to the children. Rather than eating the M&Ms right away, the children must assign an aspect of their lives to each color, such as red symbolizing something they love to do, green for something they dislike, orange for family members, blue for friends and brown for favorite foods. Have the children walk around the room sharing the information about themselves. They can enjoy the candy when the activity is over.
