Prepare 13 strips of paper for each child that measure 1 inch by 6 inches. Additionally, each child will need a strip that is 4 inches by 4 inches. Instruct children to start by folding one strip in half and gluing it so it forms a loop. They will then loop a strip through the first one, glue it and repeat the process. Children can cut a circle from the square to form the head for the caterpillar and draw a face on it. Glue the head to the caterpillar at one end of the loops.
Do this project as a class to make one large caterpillar. Gather items such as nine large circles made out of poster board, a leaf made out of poster board, white tissue, magazine pictures of the food the caterpillar ate (or draw photos of the food), two rectangles made out of poster board, crayons and a label for all days of the week. The nine circles will make the body of the caterpillar. Children will participate by adding the food on each circle that the caterpillar ate on the corresponding day. The first circle will be the caterpillar's face. The last will be the holes made by the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Children can color in each circle.
Use simple egg cartons to make adorable caterpillars. Split the egg cartons in half lengthwise so there are enough to go around for each child. Children can be creative and draw and color the egg carton cups. Glue or insert pipe cleaners for the antenna of the caterpillar. To insert them, an adult first must poke sharp holes through the carton.
Gather construction paper, scissors, googly eyes, pipe cleaner, glue and crayons. Children will trace their hand six times on the construction paper and cut out the tracings. On another piece of construction paper, draw a long oval shape for the butterfly's body, as well as a small circle to make the butterfly's head. Glue three hand print tracings on each side of the body of the butterfly as the wings --- with the palm being the part that is glued to the body. Fold a pipe cleaner in a v-shape and glue it to the head of the butterfly to form the antenna. Children can then color the butterfly.
