Important Features of a Christian Classroom

Christian classrooms, whether at school or church, have important identifying features that set them apart from secular classrooms. No matter what grade, from preschool to college and beyond, these features help set the tone for a Christian environment. One of the most important features is the atmosphere of the Christian classroom and how it can determine student acceptance of the religious principles.
  1. Teachers

    • Christian teachers who embrace a biblical world view form the foundation for a Christian classroom. A teacher who does not espouse Christian beliefs may present the material but cannot teach these views wholeheartedly. The Christian teacher should model Christian values, including compassion, love, faith, gentleness and integrity. In many cases, he will need to adhere to the doctrinal statement of the church or school where he teaches. In addition, he needs to know how to communicate these values effectively to students throughout every aspect of the school day.

    Bibles

    • The Bible also forms the core of the Christian classroom. The teacher should relate the Bible to all subjects and day-to-day events, including student relationships. When students understand the Bible's perspective on any subject, they begin to see how to apply the scriptures in their daily lives, not just at church or even at school. Other Christian books further enhance Christian views as well.

    Curriculum

    • Some Christian schools use curriculum created especially for a Christian classroom, with biblical terms and Christian references laced throughout the materials. While all Christian schools may not always use Christian curriculum, it offers support to the Christian values the teacher wants to communicate. Each school board or council may address this on a regular basis, sometimes as often as every one to two years, depending on the needs of the school itself. Two examples of common Christian curricula include A Beka and Alpha Omega.

    Prayer

    • Prayer is another important feature in a Christian classroom. By beginning and ending the school day with prayer and praying when difficult situations arise, Christian teachers can model their belief in the power of prayer. Teachers can engage children in prayer through taking prayer requests once a day and can encourage children to pray out loud as well. This practical application of Christian values helps young people see the relevance of prayer in daily situations. Students also appreciate asking for God's help before tests.

    Decorations

    • Christian decorations for bulletin boards, doors and walls add to the atmosphere of the classroom and support the teacher's efforts as she reminds her students of their responsibility to follow the word of God. Posters of items, such as Bible verses, help students as they memorize scriptures.
