Typing Games Used in Elementary Schools

Typing games teach elementary school students important skills. Their typing speed and accuracy will increase on the QWERTY keyboard because of educational games. Setting goals and introducing keyboarding skills will help students master typing so that they can work on a computer, create documents and write their own stories. Typing games will also show children new words and help them learn the layout of the keyboard. Early learning of the keyboard will build confidence and will help them in the future, when typing skills are important for many reasons. Learning to type in elementary school will be a good start for later homework projects, like research papers.
  1. The Speedy Speller Game

    • Speedy speller teaches good typing skills and hand-eye coordination to elementary children.

Speedy speller will have players spell spoken words as quickly and accurately as they can on a computer. When they are finished, they will be able to check the spelling and move on to the next word. The game requires your computer to have speakers--or a teacher can simply speak the words. Speedy Speller is a keyboarding game that covers the three basic issues of accuracy, speed and technique.

    The Qwerty Warriors Game

    • Qwerty Warriors encourage children to learn the keyboard.

Qwerty warriors teaches children the importance of spelling correctly. Each player will type the word that appears below an "enemy" on the screen and will hit enter to fire. If the work is spelled correctly, the enemy will be killed. The longer the player survives, the higher the score. Use "Ctrl" to pause the game. The purpose of keyboarding games is to help children understand spatial organization. Successes will encourage children and have them desire to continue to learn more. Points are used to keep score and move quickly through levels and add to their entertainment.

    The Typing Speed Test Game

    • The typing speed test game will encourage children's creativity.

A typing speed test is a basic typing test that will have students type a test as quickly and as accurately as possible. This type of keyboarding game prepares students for testing their typing speed and proficiency. Students will learn the location of the different keys on the keyboard. This type of lesson is similar to writing short reports to children using keyboarding skills. Creating reports will help children learn keyboarding and word processing features like spacing and formatting. Students can also create poetry on the keyboard; this lesson will also encourage children's creativity.

The Typing of the Ghosts Game

    • The typing of the ghosts game will help students master typing at an early age.

The object of the Typing of the Ghosts game (see Resources) is to destroy the "ghosts." You do this by typing the words that show on the ghosts. You use the backspace key if you want to cancel what you have typed. This game makes elementary students practice keyboarding, and students need practice such as this in order to master the skills needed for word documents and computer processing projects.
