Free Non-Computer Math Games for Elementary

The concepts surrounding math are not always easy for an elementary student to grasp. Numbers and figures don't always come naturally to kids, but there's no doubting their importance. A good grasp of math is invaluable when kids get older, and it's a crucial part of getting a desirable job or securing a place at college.
  1. Addition Top-It

    • Addition Top-It is a straightforward but fun game for kids in first or second grade. The game works best with two players. Deal out a set of around 40 number cards, numbered between one and 10. Each child then turns over two cards and shouts out the sum as quickly as possible. Whoever has the highest, or lowest, total wins all four cards. When all the cards are used up, the player with the most is the winner.

    Name the Number

    • Name the Number is a rapid-fire problem-solving game. Start by shuffling a deck of numbered cards and placing five cards face up. Then take the top face-down card in the deck and turn that upward. Players must think of a problem, to make the 6th number, using two of the first five cards. For example, 2,5,1,9,3, with 7 as the 6th card, would make 7, 5+2 or 9-2 correct answers. The fastest player wins the three cards he used, and the game continues.

    Math Baseball

    • Math Baseball is a game suitable for all ages. The class splits into two teams. One player on the batting team picks his level of difficulty: single, double, triple or home run. If he gets the question right, he will move to the appropriate base. If he gets it wrong, a member of the fielding team has the chance to get an out by answering the question. If she fails, the batters all advance one base on an error. The teams then alternate for a set amount of time, outs, runs or innings.

    Square It

    • Square It is a visual strategy game which can help introduce kids to squares and angles. The game is played on a square grid of any size, which can be drawn or printed off. Players take turns to place a colored maker inside one of the squares on the grid. A winner is declared when one player forms an unobstructed square with his markers.
