One activity is to make a Day of the Dead skull mask. The Mexican holiday is celebrated on November 2 to remember and pray for relatives and friends who have died. Because the holiday falls so close to Halloween, many American schools use Halloween as the day for this project.
Use aluminum tooling foil to show the Mexican folk art of metal tooling. Students can use wooden tools, aluminum foil, markers, beads and tape to make some images of Mexican cultures in the aluminum foil. After they are done, students can discuss their works with each other.
Make a poncho for Cinco de Mayo. This holiday on May 5 celebrates Mexico's victory at the Battle of Puebla. The celebration involves dancing and bright colors, for which students can make ponchos. Ponchos can be made from fabric or paper bags and decorated with markers or paint.
