If your child enjoys acting, consider finding an after-school program that offers drama classes. Fifth grade children enjoy being able to pretend they are someone other than who they are. Local theaters and colleges often offer drama classes for elementary age students. Usually at the end of these programs children put on a performance.
Fifth grade is a good age to get kids involved in sports. Sports can cover a wide range of interests, including football, basketball, volleyball, horseback riding and dance classes. Local recreation centers are good places to look for after-school sports programs. City leagues also have after-school sports programs, usually separated by grade. These often have busing options from local schools to the activities.
Art classes are popular after-school activities for kids. Drawing, ceramics, candle making and painting are all options. Check with local craft stores to see what classes they offer. Local recreation centers also may offer classes in art. You may also want to check to see if there is transportation available from the school to the art classes.
Look into different organizations in your area that may have after school programs suitable for fifth graders. 4-H, the YMCA and Boys and Girls Clubs are well-known for their after-school programs. These organizations offer a variety of activities for students who do not want to focus on only one area. Many times schools and organizations work together to either get kids to the organization's building or have representatives from the organization hold programs directly at the school.
