Learning to Read Flash Cards

Flash cards are essential learning tools for any teacher or student. Learning math, English, history--or any subject--is enhanced with the use of flash cards. Using these learning devices in class or at home as study tools helps to keep facts and figures fresh and accelerates the capacity for learning. Learning to read flash cards is a straightforward proposition for both children and adults alike.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an object onto the front side of a 3-by-5-inch index card or cut out a image from a book or magazine and tape the image to the front side. Limit one object per card. Flip the card over. Write on the back side the name of the object displayed on the front. Repeat this step for as many flash cards you intend to create.

    • 2

Turn all cards face up. Collect all cards into a pile. Shuffle the pile to mix up the order of the cards. Give the pile to the person testing the pupil.

    • 3

Pick up the top card if you are the tester. Show the pupil only the front of the card. Ask the pupil to identify the object on the card. Move onto the next card only if the pupil answers exactly what is printed on the reverse side of the card. Place all cards the pupil got wrong in a separate pile and revisit those cards once you are through the initial pile.

    • 4

Repeat these steps for any subject. Learn colors, for example, by shading the front of the card in red. Write the word "red" on the back of the card and ask the pupil to identify the color. Or build your vocabulary by writing a word on the front of the card and writing the definition on the back. Increase math skills by writing a simple equation on the front of the card. Inscribe the answer on the back.
