How to Create a Bar Graph for a 5th Grade Science Project

Often, science projects require students to organize data in a usable form outside of written or verbal explanation. A bar graph is an appropriate choice for a fifth-grade project when arranging research or experiment results and information. The two axes represented by vertical and horizontal lines are necessary to begin charting the information so if necessary, brush up on your math skills before attempting to present the scientific data.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a vertical straight line using a ruler and a pencil from the lower left hand corner of a piece of graph paper. Connect the bottom of the vertical line to a horizontal line stretching across the paper. Leave space on the paper to the left of the vertical line and underneath the horizontal line for data labels.

    • 2

Write digits, from the line connecting point, up the vertical line to the largest number in the collected scientific data from the project, starting with zero and writing the numbers on the grid lines instead of in the spaces. When the numbers are too high to fit on the paper, condense the numbers by using multiples. For example, instead of numbering 1, 2, 3 and so on, use 5, 10, 15. and so on to organize your information.

    • 3

Draw a bar from the horizontal line to the number of the first piece of data. Label the type of data underneath the horizontal line. For example, when charting five students who chose cheerleading as their favorite sport, draw a bar from the horizontal line to the line displaying the number five along the vertical line and write "cheerleading" underneath that bar.

    • 4

Repeat drawing bars, with a space in between, for each category of information. Shade in each bar with a different colored pencil to show the differences in data.

    • 5

Label both the horizontal and vertical axes with the appropriate titles. Using the example from Step 3, the horizontal line would read "Sports" while the vertical line represents "Number of Students."

    • 6

Create a legend in the upper right-hand corner of the graph paper to notify the reader of the condensed information from the science project. Draw a box and print the amount of results next to the written category. In the example, a box would contain the word "Cheerleading" and state the number five next to the sport.
