How to Make an Elementary School Project on a Rainforest Habitat

Rainforests cover well over one billion acres of the Earth's surface with a vast biodiversity of trees, plants, insects and animals. These luscious habitats populate areas in Central America, South America, the Congo, Madagascar and Southeast Asia. Elementary school students can easily create projects on the rainforest starting with background research and ending with a written report. Add a visual aid such as a colorfully illustrated poster or three-dimensional diorama for a stand out complement to this habitat-themed activity.

Instructions

  1. Rainforest Research

    • 1

Choose a specific geographic region for your rainforest research. For example, select the South American Amazon Rainforest or try the African Congo River Basin Forest.

    • 2

Visit at least two websites that contain information on your rainforest region. Make sure to use authoritative sources such as sites from colleges/universities, global organizations, governments or reputable media outlets such as National Geographic or the Discovery Channel.

    • 3

Note or highlight specific facts about the rainforest. Because there are far too many species of plant life, animals or insects to name in one report, choose a few that speak to the biological diversity of the habitat. Other facts to include may be the general temperature, weather, rainfall amounts, habitation by humans and changes in the environment.

    • 4

Write your rainforest research report. Specific teachers or assignments may call for different report formats. Always follow your teacher's guidelines. In general, students should include an introduction, a body with important information and facts and a conclusion.

    • 5

Add a cover page with your name, date and the assignment topic. Print your report on your computer.

    Rainforest Art

    • 6

Build a rainforest diorama that includes a few select plants, trees and animals. Lay an empty, open shoe box on its side horizontally. Draw a background on the 'walls' of the box with a marker.

    • 7

Paint the background, and bottom of the interior of the box, using tempera paints and a thin brush. Use vibrant greens and earthy browns for a realistic approach.

    • 8

Construct trees and plants pop up style by putting pieces of green construction paper and folding tabs underneath. Make the tabs approximately one-quarter of an inch in size. Glue or tape the tabs to the bottom of the box. Add extra plant life by gluing crumpled green, yellow and brown tissue paper to the bottom of the rainforest habitat diorama.

    • 9

Make a few different species of animals, birds or insects with modeling clay. Glue the clay animals to the bottom of the box or position them in or near the faux trees and plants.
