How to Make a PowerPoint for an Elementary Classroom

The Microsoft PowerPoint application allows you to create slides on a computer that can be presented on a projector screen in the classroom. PowerPoint presentations are powerful learning tools and can be personalized to your audience's skill level. Using a PowerPoint presentation in an elementary classroom can be an effective means to convey a message to students, regardless of their age.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your PowerPoint application. Click "File" from the menu, and select "New Presentation." Consider your audience before creating the presentation. A presentation for first graders who can't yet read will be different than one for literate sixth graders.

    • 2

Add text to your slide by clicking in the title text box and typing a title. Consider a title that is appropriate for elementary students. If students are unable to read, you may wish to consider an image instead. Follow the same process in the subtitle box. Pictures can be imported using the "Copy" and "Paste" commands. Edit or adjust the location of the picture once it has been pasted into the slide. Use graphics to emphasize key points. The use of visual aids and variation in colors and fonts will help captivate elementary students' attention. Short anecdotes that student's can relate to can also prove helpful.

    • 3

Create another slide by clicking the "New Slide" button on the toolbar. Continue adding additional slides until your presentation is complete. Keep the presentation short and simple. Too many slides can be boring and overwhelming to an elementary classroom, which could distract from the overall message of your presentation.

    • 4

Skip from slide to slide by clicking the button on the lower right corner of the PowerPoint window. Click the button with the upper pointing arrow to move back to the previous slide, and click the button with the lower pointing arrow to advance to the next slide. The presentation should be in a story layout for elementary students, which will enable them to stay more involved.

    • 5

View your presentation by clicking the "Slide Show" button on the toolbar. This will allow you to preview your presentation prior to saving it to your hard drive. Make sure the font is large enough to read in the presentation. Elementary students could be seated as far as 50 feet away from the presentation screen in their classroom. Also, consider allowing a child, who is of similar age as the students, to preview the presentation for clarity and appropriateness in an elementary classroom.

Save your presentation. Click "File" from the menu option, then select "Save As". You can then name your presentation, which will be saved to your hard drive.
