How to Make a Fossil Out of Water, Glue & Sugar Cubes

Fossils are the remains or impressions of plants and animals from the past. You can make your own "fossils" at home with sugar cubes, glue and water. This project would work great to illustrate a science lesson about biology. Each element you use to make the "fossils" represents something different. The sugar cubes represents an organism or plant; the water represents bacteria, water and scavengers that destroy the organism; and the glue represents the fossil that is left behind.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay four sugar cubes flat in the shape of a square and glue the cubes together. Make another square in the same manner. The glue will slightly melt the sugar. Let the glue dry and harden completely.

    • 2

Glue one square on top of the other to form a cube that is four cubes on each side and two cubes high. Let the glue dry and harden completely.

    • 3

Drop the cube into a bowl of warm water. The sugar cubes will dissolve, leaving behind the glue, which represents the fossil.
